  • Windows/Linux security updates

1. Java updates
2. Use current versions of all software

  • Anti-virus software

A. A resident scanner, but 3 or more in total engines
B. Set browsers to erase files at exit
C. Scan ALL files, and don’t just install software
D. Adware scanner
E. Spyware scanner

  • Strong passwords

A. Use uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols if possible
B. Do NOT use the same password on everything!
C. Use more characters
1. 16 digits @ 1 word a second = 1000 years to crack
D. Login passwords help
E. Change passwords often
F. DON’T tell your passwords
G. If possible, DON’T store passwords on the computer in a file

  • Back up your data

1. Real time services like Carbonite
2. Manual services which can be set

  • Firewall software – that can block applications

A. ISP
B. Routers
1. Encrypt your network (WPA at least)

  • Privileges and permissions – DON’T let everyone be an administrator

1. Turn off settings that aren’t needed if possible
2. Change default settings (WORKGROUP name for example)
